A New Travel Authorisation for EU Visitors: European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)

ETIAS: A New Travel Authorisation for EU Visitors

ETIAS: A New Travel Authorisation for EU Visitors

Starting in 2025, a big change is coming for anyone planning to visit Europe. ETIAS - the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. Similar to the US's ESTA, ETIAS will require visitors from visa-free countries to get electronic authorisation before travelling to Europe.

If you're heading to the EU for business, tourism, medical, or transit purposes, you'll need to be aware of this new process. Here's everything business travelers and travel managers need to know about ETIAS and how to prepare for this important change.

Why Is the EU Introducing ETIAS?

The European Union is increasing its border security with ETIAS. While visitors from many countries, including the US, Canada, and Australia, have enjoyed visa-free travel to the EU, there’s been no prior security screening before their arrival. Now, with ETIAS, travelers will undergo additional security checks before entering the Schengen Area.

The goal is to improve safety by catching potential risks before people even step foot in Europe. And although ETIAS is not a visa, it does introduce a visa-waiver system, much like the US's ESTA, where travelers need to apply for authorisation in advance.

Who Needs ETIAS?

If you’re from a country that currently has visa-free access to Europe, you’ll need ETIAS. This includes countries like the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. To see a full list of eligible countries, click here.

Travelers will need to apply online for this authorisation before travelling for business, leisure, or transit purposes. It's valid for stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period across the Schengen Area. But keep in mind, it won’t apply if you're planning to work or study long-term in Europe.

How Does the ETIAS Application Work?

The ETIAS application is designed to be straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Prepare Your Documents: You'll need a valid biometric passport that is machine-readable. Make sure your passport has at least three months of validity left by the time you're planning to travel.
  2. Fill Out the Form: The application form will be available online or via a mobile app. You’ll need to provide personal details like your name, date of birth, travel document info, and information about your trip and purpose of travel.
  3. Submit the Application: After entering your details, submit the application. Most are processed quickly, often within minutes, but in rare cases, it could take up to 30 days if further checks are needed.
  4. Pay the Fee: The application fee for ETIAS is €7, payable online. Travelers under 18, over 70, and family members of EU citizens are exempt from this fee.
  5. Receive Your ETIAS Authorisation: Once approved, ETIAS is valid for three years or until your passport expires. This means you can make multiple trips to Europe during that period without reapplying.

What Does ETIAS Mean for Business Travelers?

For business travelers who frequently visit the EU,ETIAS will add an extra step before travel, but once it's set up, the process should be quick and easy. The key takeaway here is that you must apply before your trip – it’s not something you can do at the airport or upon arrival. Make sure your team members are aware of this requirement well in advance.

While the new system aims to make things more secure and smooth, it’s a good idea to allow extra time for the first few trips as everyone adjusts to the new process.

Be Prepared for ETIAS in 2025

ETIAS is a significant change, a manageable one. Once travelers are familiar with the system, it should make travel to Europe more secure without being too much of a hassle. Just remember to apply ahead of time, have all your documents ready, and be aware of the new requirements before planning your trip.
